Problems with starting in the wind? March 5, 2010 D. faletti (northern california) I always have a little fine steel wool in the pack with this, scrape off a little magnesium into the steel wool and spark it.starts fast
Learned that trick in boy scouts back when I was a pup and wasn't allowed to play with matches,
Burnt down ½ the garage and was the only kid in the neighborhood that wasn't allowed to play with steel wool.
Trust me, works great, same as they have for decades.the price is a little high
Like anything you should try it before you need it (just don't do it in the garage)
Works as seen on Survivorman February 12, 2010 ectoflanger (latitude infinity) Very effective for starting a campfire. Be sure to have all your kindling in place since it burns fast.
A Must Have! February 10, 2010 John A. Kaiser (New York NY) this is with out a doubt a great item! I keep it on my key chain for a backup fire starter.
$ 6.88 at wallmart February 6, 2010 Gdaiva (Las Vegas, NV) Haven't used it, but shopping around, and found one at wallmart, so I'll save it on shiping. But going to buy the sweedish one too, seems more reliable.
Put It In Your Backpack! January 30, 2010 James Veith (Wisconsin) It's Winter in Wisconsin, so I didn't go out in the cold and snow to try it out to make a fire. But I did (carefully in a metal pan) start a small piece of kleenex on fire in our basement so I know it works, and works easily and beautifully. It's one of those items that I bought and will almost definitely never need, yet if I ever do get caught out overnight while doing a hike somewhere, I know I will not be without fire. I put it with other emergency pieces inside my backpack with a small cheap pocket knife (you need this to create the spark)and that's where I will leave it except for "play" fire starting (like to impress friends in an outdoor fire pit), or when it's needed for the real thing.
How can you claim to be a hiker/adventurer if you can't make a fire without a lighter or matches?!!!
